The default map size is 40x40. The map can be read from a file or created using the User Interface. The Map Items and their characters that can appear in the map file are below.

| Nothing | A space indicates nothing at the location. | |
| N | Nest | Where the ants start and where they bring the food to. |
| W | Water | Can be crossed by ants moving on to the water and building an ant bridge. |
| O | Obstacle | Cannot be crossed by ants. |
| T | Tree | A tree that ant can get leaves from. |
| 1-9 | Food | The number is the amount of ants required to pick up the food. |
