Multi-speaker solution for a hostile office environment

This will be pretty lo-jack and extremely MacGuyver in nature, but bear with me.

I have a a basic home entertainment setup (one sixty inch PAL standard flat panel with stereo out, a DVD player, a VCR, and an incomplete Samsung receiver/5-disc DVD player/5.1 setup without the prorietary wiring harnesses.) I've been asked to attach four extra speakers at a considerable distance- twenty to forty feet- to the unit. I have VERY limited resources to draw from as I am on an Army base in Kuwait. The speakers that would normally be run to the receiver are currently only being used as left and right channel directly from the TV and the rest are fair game- for now. My question is: how would I best implement these extra speakers at low cost/effort? I have two hundred feet of speaker wire available currently, I could purchase or "acquire" small speakers easily, and I *might* be able to get my hands on a basic soldering kit. My concern is wasting a great deal of effort and putting too much of a load on the audio for no return.

My first thought was to make a basic terminal board for left/right channel from the TV and branch the speakers in parallel from there, leaving the possibilty for the 5.1 receiver to be repaired later and hooked up. Or is there an easier/better way?

I wouldn't run more than 2 speakers off the TV. The speakers are most likely 8 ohm (although sometimes those all-in-one units have 12 or 16 ohm speakers). In parallel they would be 4 ohm and there is little chance the TV can handle a 4 ohm load. If the TV output isn't protected, you could fry the audio output of the TV and be left with no audio. Try to find the manuals for the TV and receiver just to make sure. Its possible it will work, but it wont be true surround sound.

What is the model of the receiver. I couldn't find any that use a single harness. It looks like some have a 6 pin harness for both left and right. Others use wireless rear speakers. You can proabably get the manual for the receiver here: http://www.samsung.com/support/productsupport/download/index.aspx

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Good luck and be safe.

Thanks for the link and the advice. I'm not worried about a surround setup as much as trying to get audio to some distant cubicles. If I placed the speakers in series would the worst I'd have to worry about be too large of a load, loss, and/or interference? I can live with a weak signal so long as I don't make blue sparks and smoke happen.

Wiring the speakers in series wont break anything. If the front and rear speakers are identical then it wont sound that bad. Maybe just not loud enough. If they are different then you may not like the sound but it is worth a try.

Hi

If your idea of music around the office is a hi-fi system in the any area of office and portable systems everywhere else, you should consider a Multiroom audio solution. Discreet speakers, built into the walls or the ceiling, deliver the sound, while wall mounted control pads enable you to select the song or radio station you want to listen to, wherever you are in the office. It's depend on your supplier. Demonstration facilities  which will gives you the opportunity to try out different combinations of equipment before you make your decision.
