Speaker Wiring

We just bought a house and the previous owner has numerous speakers through out it. Some of the rooms have knobs which I assume are for controling the volume from that switch since they don't control the lights. In the living room wall outlet there's ton's of wires that he nicely labeled. The two wire cables I know are speaker wires, but there's also some 4 wire cables which I have no idea what to hook them up to. I'm assuming they might go to the volume switches?????We are installing a Home Entertainment center AV system. I can only hook up two zones with my AV receiver so I know i need a splitter but still don't know where or what the 4 wire cables are used for or where to hook them up. Can you help?

There are 2 types of volume control knobs:
1) The simpler types have the speaker wire pass right through the volume controller. Since one knob controls 1 pair of speakers, the installer probably used 4 conductor speaker wire. The wire runs from the receiver to the volume knob, to one speaker and then the other. If this is the case, then the 4 wires will be thicker (18g or less) and the colors are probably red, black, green, and white.
  • Red is for right positive
  • Black is for right negative
  • White is for left positive
  • Green is for left negative
2) The second type of volume control sends a signal back to the amp telling it to turn the volume up or down. These systems require specific amplifiers. If this is the case, then the wires connected to the volume knob will be thinner (18g or above - maybe even Cat5). Sometimes these controls will have infrared sensors or lights. If there is any writing on the volume knob that info might help also.
Also, if you are going to split your AV receiver output into more than just the two A/B channels you must use a impedance matching switch like this.
